After being laid off last week I particularly enjoyed this bolt of optimism.
Inspiring Article in the NYTimes
“People who believe in the power of talent tend not to fulfill their potential because they’re so concerned with looking smart and not making mistakes. But people who believe that talent can be developed are the ones who really push, stretch, confront their own mistakes and learn from them.”
Educational research supports that statement. From an early age, students who are taught strategies and instilled with the belief system that you can get smarter with hard work and effective effort are more likely to take risks and perform well not to please others but because they truly enjoy learning. There is a lot of work done by Carol Dweck, I believe she is out of Columbia, that addresses just this issue.
Thanks so much for this information. It was just what I needed this morning. I highly recommend this interview with Carol Dweck.
